Removing your teeth for dentures is a significant decision that requires a smooth transition. Immediate dentures can fill that gap, and it is the most common suggestion for those who undergo a tooth extraction. Partial dentures fill in the space vacated by the extracted teeth and can help your gums heal as well.

This temporary filling will align your teeth until you get a permanent solution for the tooth gap. Dentists evaluate whether or not you will need immediate dentures. If you are advised to use immediate dentures, there are several options for you to consider.

How do they make immediate dentures?

The prosthetist will take impressions of your mouth before the extraction of natural teeth. From there, they will create a denture that copies your teeth and make modifications if needed. After the extraction, the dentist will place the temporary dentures to fill the gap.

While immediate dentures are not aesthetically pleasing, they get the job done. Prosthetists complete the immediate dentures about one week after the extraction. Compare that to a conventional denture that is finished six months after the operation to allow your gums to shrink and fit the dentures better.

Pros and cons of immediate dentures

Many patients prefer temporary dentures because it fills the gaps between teeth effectively to provide a more comfortable feeling. Likewise, immediate dentures minimize gum bleeding, and you can get them during the same day of the extraction.

On the other hand, permanent fillings will eventually replace immediate dentures, and they may not appear the same as your natural teeth because you haven’t tried them before extraction. Finally, these dentures change their size when your gums heal, and you’ll need a temporary liner to hold it in place.

Add a temporary liner

After the operation, remember to follow to directions of the dentist to facilitate proper healing. Once your gums start to shrink after the extraction, the immediate dentures will become loose, and using a liner is a must to tighten the dentures while your gums continue to heal. This option is more appropriate until permanent dentures can get the job done more effectively. Patients need about three to five liners for each denture until six months after the operation. Once the gums entirely subside to its usual size, permanent liners or dentures will take its place depending on your dentist’s suggestion.

Other options for dentures

Aside from immediate dentures, you can also opt for complete dentures that mask the upper or lower teeth. However, this bulky option requires constant relining. On the other hand, though partial dentures are more difficult to fit, they don’t take much space because they replace some teeth. Finally, flexible dentures take the shape of your teeth without adding much weight to your mouth. These dentures won’t break when dropped, and they can stay in place without liners or adhesives.
