Many people don’t give much second thought to oral health but ignoring minor issues can quickly come back to haunt you in the form of decaying teeth. Once your pearly whites start to rot, the only solution is to take it out, leaving your mouth with awkward gaps and a dent to your confidence.

Fortunately, you can easily address the problem with the help of dental implants. It’s easy to think that drilling titanium into your jaw is intimidating but technological advancements make it possible to consider this as a minor surgical procedure.

What To Expect After The Surgery

The recovery period, however, can be uncomfortable in many ways. It’s the phase wherein your mouth is healing, resulting in the following aftereffects:

  • Swelling - After the surgery, you can expect for bruises to manifest. It will also start to swell, which should calm down within three days after the procedure. In the meantime, you can ease the swelling by applying an ice pack around the dental implant area for the first two days.
  • Bleeding - There’s no need to panic if you see blood mixed in your saliva as it’s a normal occurrence that typically lasts within 24 hours after the surgery. It’s also expected to experience a minor nosebleed if the implant was placed on your upper jaw. If the bleeding persists even if you use gauze for thirty minutes to absorb the excess, seek dental attention immediately.

What To Do For The First 48 Hours After Getting Dental Implants

In addition to bleeding and swelling, you’ll likely experience a constant ache or pangs of dull pain for a few days. While the dentist will provide pain medication to reduce the discomfort, be careful not to aggravate the surgical areas.

You can still brush your teeth during the night of your dental implant procedure, though be sure to use soft bristles and avoid disturbing the wound for a few days. You can ensure that no bacteria can grow and compromise your health by rinsing your mouth with room temperature or cold saltwater solution.

Avoid using an electric toothbrush with a water jet, and try to steer clear from smoking cigarettes or consuming alcohol as both vices can slow down the healing process.

The Bottom Line: Recovering From A Dental Implant Procedure

Recovering from a dental implant procedure is simple, but resting for the first 48 hours can do wonders in ensuring you recover as smoothly as possible. There are medications that can ease the pain, but try to be gentle and careful with your teeth while the surgical area is still healing.

Of course, it’s in your best interest to set a schedule with your local dentist to have them inspect your progress and clean your teeth in the first few weeks after the surgery.
