Dental Implants

Dental Implants at our local dentist office near you in West Bloomfield, Ann Arbor, Waterford, Michigan

If you have missing teeth, an implant may be what you need to make your teeth functional again. Implants are preferred to solutions like bridges and dentures because they allow the patient to retain more chewing function while maintaining the health of the gums, bone and surrounding teeth.

Not everyone is a candidate for implants. However, in general, if you have damaged your teeth or have lost permanent teeth you will be a match for dental implants. One thing to consider is your overall health also determines if dental implants will work for you, there are some conditions that may cause an implant not to fuse correctly to your bone.

That’s why it’s very important for you to let your dentist know about your overall health conditions and current medications you are taking.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant consists of three parts:

  1. A post that’s made of either titanium or zirconium. It attaches to your jaw.
  2. An abutment, which is a connector that bridges the post and the new tooth.
  3. A prosthetic, which looks and functions like a normal tooth.

An implant can consist of one tooth, several teeth, or it can replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Implants are a type of cosmetic dentistry and have aesthetic benefits as well.  If the procedure is done correctly, dental implants are comfortable, hygienic and allow the patient to retain full chewing function.

The healing process varies from case to case, however, we are here for you along the entire recovery period (which isn’t that long!).

Regular Implants

A regular implant is one of the types of implants available.  It uses a standard-sized post or screw that’s placed in the jawbone. They’re known for being stable, long-lasting, and are usually the preferred choice. The downside is that they are more costly than mini implants, and some patients don’t have sufficient bone density to sustain it which can result in dental implant failure.  We offer free consultations to help you find out which of our implant procedures is right for you.

Mini Dental Implants

By contrast, mini implants use a narrower screw, which is both less invasive and more cost-effective. It’s also preferred when the open space is not wide enough to easily fit a regular implant. However, a mini implant is not as durable and stable. When determining which type is best, we perform a thorough consultation and analysis.

The Difference Between Regular and Mini Implants

Everyone has different teeth sizes. This is why each dental implant is explicitly produced for each individual. The difference between a regular implant and a mini implant is a matter of size. A regular implant uses a post that has a standardized size.

Testing has proven that a post of standard size has the most stability and durability. This makes them the preferred option when a dental implant procedure is required.

However, not everyone is a good candidate for a standard size or regular dental implant because a sufficient amount of bone density is required for the implant to be long-lasting and non-intrusive.  Additionally, as more of titanium or zirconium is used in the production of a regular implant, they can be more expensive.

This is why many patients seeking cost-effective implants or who have low bone density are recommended mini implants. Mini implants use a narrower screw making them more cost-effective and easier to place in your mouth. The only drawback is this narrowness makes them slightly less stable and long-lasting compared to a regular implant.
